Finding Autumn Magic in the New Forest | Aditi's Pen

If you follow me on Instagram, you'll know I'm a teeny bit obsessed with Autumn. The transition from the greens of summer to the stunning autumn colours is magical. And though this cosy weather is on its way out, we held on to it a tad bit longer as we spent a day in New Forest a few weeks back.

Only about a 90-minute train ride from London’s Waterloo Station, the New Forest was the perfect base for us to enjoy long woodland walks, snug reading nights in front of a crackling fireplace, and leisurely pub dinners.

“Autumn carries more gold in its pocket than all the other seasons.”
― Jim Bishop

On a crisp Sunday morning we stepped out from our hotel, and just a couple of yards away were lovely moorland views. A dog chased passed us, sniffing his way through a pile of fallen leaves and we curiously followed him to find the most stunning scarlet toadstool.

It started drizzling then, a slight gentle shower against the bright bright sun. And I just knew a miracle was about to emerge across the clear blue sky. But what we saw was magnificent; never before I had seen a rainbow so full.

We stood mesmerized, watching the rainbow spread its joyous colours across the autumn landscape, and into our hearts.

With wide grins split across our faces, we then followed a path downhill and met these handsome fellas! I'm talking about the ponies, of course!

The native New Forest ponies are undoubtedly one of the National Park’s main attractions, seen wandering freely, grazing merrily.

We were getting deeper into the forest now, but not before another rainbow greeted us.

The forest were calling out to us, ready with the greatest show of the year. A crunchy carpet of leaves was laid out, and we walked towards the golden hues.

“Every forest has its own character, its own whispered rumors and smells.”
― Jennifer Ackerman, The Genius of Birds

I would like to think that the forest let us in on their secrets, charms, rumours, they bared it all. My little finds included fallen crab apples, fungi underneath autumn leaves and on the bark of gnarled, old trees, broken conkers, ripe red rowan berries and beautifully textured fir cones.

I am so grateful to have spent a day finding autumn magic in the New Forest. Such days teach you to be in the moment, find the extraordinary in the everyday ordinary, and especially, autumn as a season, teaches you to let go, graciously.
