Postcards From Paris

I had never imagined that I would be spending a Birthday in Paris, ever! As soon as we got our Schengen visas sorted we booked a short and sweet weekend break to Paris and what a delightful trip it was.

We took it easy the first day. After indulging in coffee and croissants, we took an overview of the city from atop Tour Montparnasse and the Eiffel Tower.

Day 2 was as action packed as could be. Although I had planned to get up early morning to catch the sunrise, the rains had other plans. We stepped out around 11:00 am and had a classic French breakfast of Quiche and Pain aux raisins from a nearby Sunday street market, before taking the metro to Les Invalides to check out the golden dome more closely which is famous as the final resting place of NapolĂ©on Bonaparte.

We then crossed Pont Alexandre III and headed to the Louvre museum.

Upon exiting Louvre towards river Seine you see thousands of love locks attached on the side of the Pont de Arts. Pont de Arts had come to be known as the 'love lock' bridge with tourists attaching locks on the bridge and throwing the key in the river as a way of promising never ending love, but the affair ended this year when a million locks weighing 45 tonnes were removed from the bridge for safety reasons. I was actually surprised to see the locks there and the romantic me had to do the 'love lock' thing.

We walked along the river towards Notre Dam Cathedral and stopped for a quick bite and some champagne to toast the lovely day.

We hopped on to the tube next and went to Montmarte to take a closer look at SacrĂ©-Coeur Basilica and roamed around the streets not just admiring the cute cafes here but indulging in some sweet delicacies.

It was time to bid this beautiful city goodbye but not before one last look at the Eiffel Tower dazzling in the evening sky.

We have already started dreaming of visiting the city again. The next time will be a more relaxed stay soaking in the Parisian culture, spending days in the museums and nights strolling on the cobbled streets.

Until next time...

    1. That was my favourite too. Imagine the sight when the entire bridge was covered with love locks. It has been taken down now and replaced with graffiti. Only one edge has these locks.

  10. I LOVE Paris! My absolute favorite thing we did there was Versailles. A little bit of a treck, but so worth it! And of course, picnics with bread, cheese, and wine on the riverfront by the Eiffel Tower. And the Champs De Elysee... I could go on and on! Your pictures are making me want to go back!

    1. Not sure. Some say they were threw in the river but don't think the authorities might have done that. Probably dumped somewhere.

  13. Your post makes me miss my family! My grandmother immigrated here from France, so my great-grandma and extended family still live there. Many of them are in Paris, and I've been lucky enough to be there three times in my life already. Ahh! I want to go back! :) It looks like you had a fabulous time. Thanks for bringing back amazing memories for me!

  18. What a wonderful way to spend a birthday! When you get to Versailles (next time :) ), be sure to go to the palace...and walk to the back of the palace grounds to see the queens cottage. Around back, there is a fish pond with beautiful goldfish that will come up and eat bread from your fingers. Behind the pond is (or was) a tall green hedge that an 8 year old can push through from the lane behind, and feed the fish- unless her daddy finds out where the 'pretty pond' is and forbids the child to EVER think of 'sneaking' onto palace grounds again! Ahhh. Happy memories of Paris and Versailles 50 years ago... Tin-tin, art along the water, watered down wine, bowls full of mussels. Happy Belated birthday!
